Confession time. I don't wash my hair everyday....ok, many times not even every other day. I know, I know, you're probably thinking, "Ew, why?"
And honestly its a mix of things. My hair is super thick and awkwardly curly...like, not the kind of cute bouncy curls that look effortless and perfect. No, these curls are in all the wrong places and go all the wrong ways. It's a lot of effort to deal with the whole wash-dry-and-style cycle on a daily basis.
Plus, it takes even more effort to get moisture to stick around here in Denver. I'm talking a leave-in conditioner, an oil, and then some texturizer. That's all before the whole styling process (bleh).
So once I get all that product in there and layered perfectly to lock in moisture, I'm going to try to make it last me a couple days at the least. Once its time to wash, I felt like I needed some sudsy shampoo to really clean all the layers of product off my hair.
Could a detergent free shampoo really work for my hair?
So, when Hairstory reached out and offered my a bottle of their New Wash, which is detergent free shampoo, I was a little skeptical.
Now, I'm all about trying new things, but I had given "no-poo" formulas a shot in the past and they always seemed to leave my hair feeling greasy and heavy with product. With my skepticism in tow, I committed to using just New Wash for 30 days.
New Wash: My Hair Story
After washing the first day, I was surprised to find that my hair felt super soft and retained moisture for a while after only washing it. I wanted to give the New Wash a chance to show me what it could do, so I skipped extra styling products like oil and texturizer for the first week. I was impressed. My hair felt soft and looked healthy and not damaged.
Here's the crazy thing. I learned that by using detergent based shampoos, I was stripping my hair of natural moisture and causing some damage, which I then had to apply 2-4 moisturizing products to "fix"
It turns out all the products I thought I needed to give my hair moisture and shine that lasted, were just because I had taken all the natural moisture and shine away from my hair in the first place by using harsh shampoo.
So, not only does my hair feel better and healthier, I've also eliminated about 5 steps from my whole hair care routine. And for a girl that doesn't like washing her hair until it's been (way) too long, I'd call that a lazy girl win.
If you're brave enough to ditch your detergent and give Hairstory's New Wash a try, here's some things you should know.
First, it might take your hair a couple days to adjust. By constantly washing your hair with shampoo that strips, it teaches your skin it needs to make more oils to compensate for all that is being stripped, so you basically have to re-train your skin and give it time to go back to normal.
NOTE: I'm not a professional, so this is my non-sciency understanding of how this works.
This means your hair might feel heavy the first couple of days to a week or so, but just give it time because I promise it's worth it.
Next, here's some details about the product. It's got essential oils and naturally-derived cleansers, plus a nice pump bottle which helps you get just the right amount. Another thing to note is a little goes a long way. I'm not even half way through the bottle and I've been using it for 30 days.
