August is here, and while that means some great sales on summer merchandise it also means it's time to start re-evaluating our wardrobes and planning out some purchases as the fall lines start to hit the racks. One of the first things that comes to mind is transition pieces. If you're anything like me, you don't really like buying something new that you can't wear right now. That's where transition pieces come in handy since they work for both now and the umcoming season's wardrobe.

Don't fear the floral...or color

When you think floral, you might often think of light pink and springy to summery patterns. Fall florals don't usually come to mind. That's likely because autumn lines as a whole usually aren't as bright and colorful, with darker more muted tones like navy, maroon, and army green taking center stage. If you're looking to break into fall florals but aren't sure where to start or you want to learn how to wear brighter colors for fall, you're reading the right post.

Tip number 01 is to find florals with fall-themed color palettes. This means you're looking for combos like a navy base with orange, red and maroon flowers (like the dress in this post), a maroon base with orange and navy dominant flowers (like this top),Β a red base with navy and dark green dominant flowers (like the pants I'm wearing for this look), or a mustard base with navy and white flowers (like this top). In summary: sticking to darker bases like maroon and navy is almost always a pretty safe bet. If you want to rock color, lean more towards mustard yellow, bright reds, or oranges.

But...that's not my color.

The next chat we usually have to have when talking about rocking color for fall is the "that's not my color" talk. Maybe you think you only look pretty in pink? Maybe you wouldn't touch orange, ever. No matter what your color or what colors you're adverse to, you can find a fall pattern - even with bright colors - that works well for you.

The trick to wearing color is this little thing called balance. There are two "rules" to balance: 01. Not too much of any one hue 02. Compliment & balance warm colors with cool colors and vice versa. I'm a strong believer that with these two rules anyone can wear any color. In fact, I think the only time something can be "not your color" is when we're talking nude shades. If you're intrigued but doubtful, let me explain.

Many people's tone - which is a mix of skin tone, hair color, eye color, etc. favors either warm or cool shades. All this means is that if my tone looks better with warm shades, I shouldn't put together an outfit of only cool shades - like all blue. I should wear a couple warmer pieces to help bring out the best in my tone. These pieces could be as major as a top or as simple as a little colored clutch or a few pieces of gold (i.e. warm) jewelry.

Even with this, you'll still have colors you favor over others and ones you think you look best in. You don't have to be stuck looking like a pumpkin if you hate orange, you can still work around this. For all you 'pretty in pink' gals out there, opt for a light blush top and then use accessories to bring in more traditional fall shades like reds, navys, maroons, army greens, or oranges. You can mix and match things like scarves, shoes, handbags & jewelry to take that blush top from feeling springy to looking like a knock out fall look.

Final tips

Some final tips for rocking fall florals this season: first, big florals are in. Leafy florals with large patterns (like your grandma's couch) are on-trend for fall. I'm personally a huge fan. One caveat with this is don't just buy it because it's on trend. If you hate couchy florals and aren't going to wear it unless it's "in" don't get it. Its better to pick something you love that will last you a few seasons. Might I suggest these faux leather leggings instead? Anyone who has talked to me about cold weather fashion in the past couple months knows I'm obsessed because they are stretchy spanx leggings sprayed with a clear coating to look like leather but are 1000% more comfy, less sweaty, and hold all your sh*t together.Β

This look

Is that my grandmas doily? And her floral couch? Good questions, but this victorian style lace top is actually a modern twist featuring a full back zipper, and sheer lace that you can dress up with a colored cami underneith or dress down with a fun hot pink bra (like I did...it matches the pink in the floral pants, promise) It clocks in at under $25 and is 30% off. These pants are good Old Navy, nice and stretchy, come in 14 colors / prints, and are also under $25.

These shoes are my go-to summer wedges from Lauren RL because I just love the gold metallic. The earrings were on clearance from H&M for $5 which I then left as a gift for my waitress at Hopdoddy. She was going to Cirque di Soleil the next day and made a comment about how she needed to find some like them. Probably a weird gift to leave a stranger but she seemed excited.Β
