This scrub is the perfect choice for exfoliating. It smells amazing, and since it's an all natural DIY, you know its free of harsh chemicals, parabens, phthalates, and all that other crap. Even better? It works great for all skin types: oily, combo, dry, you name it.

I concocted this magical face scrub recipe back in high school when I was struggling to get my acne in check, and I'm still in love with it and using it years later for bright and fresh skin. After so many requests, I'm finally sharing the secret so that you can make yourself some for your very own.

STEP 01

Grind almonds coarsely

I use a coffee grinder to do this. You can buy almond meal (which is great for Paleo pancakes), but it's usually too finely ground to work as an exfoliator. Coarsely ground almonds make a great exfoliator because they don't dissolve like sugar or salt when used in a scrub and are also a lot softer so they won't scratch or irritate your face. Plus they are natural so they don't micropollute like the little plastic beads.

STEP 02

Add the ground almonds, oatmeal and nutmeg to a medium bowl.

These ingredients are amazing for both oily, combo, and dry skin. Here's why:
 - Oatmeal helps to moisturize and reduce inflammation. It has rich anti-oxidant properties and helps reverse damage done to skin by pollution, UV rays and chemicals.
 - Nutmeg has anti-inflammitory properties to help with blemishes and help your skin settle down faster after being exfoliated. Nutmeg also has antiviral, antibacterial, and astringent properties that can help prevent clogged pores, control oil, and prevent infections (aka bacterial acne). It's seriously magic.

STEP 03

Add Vegtable Glycerin, Almond Oil, and Orange essential oil.

- Vegetable Glycerin - Glycerin attracts and seals in water which helps to maintain skin's water balance. It is also an emollient, which means it makes skin not only moist, but soft and supple to the touch.
- Sweet Almond Oil - Almond oil is a perfect cleansing oil because it is light and can easily penetrate deep into the skin, dislodging the dirt and debris that accumulate in pores and hair follicles. This can prevent blackheads, and the good amount of vitamin A in the oil can also work to reduce acne flair ups. Almond oil is also naturally hypoallergenic and has a bunch of vitamin E, which is a vitamin that has a bunch of antioxidants to protect against signs of aging.
- Orange Essential Oil - Orange oil gives the scrub a natural fresh citrus smell which is a great wake-me-up in the morning and also mixes super well with the nutmeg to smell, just, so yummy.

STEP 04

Mix well, Put in a cute jar, and let sit 24hrs before use.

Give the whole bowl a good stir, and then scoop it into a cute jar. It will smell good, and look like oatmeal. You will want to eat it. Do not do that.

It's best to let it sit for about 24 hours since it will be a little runny at first. Letting it sit allows the oatmeal to absorb the moisture from the glycerin and oil, which helps to firm it up and give it more of a thick scrub texture.

How to use it

I use this scrub at night, after I remove my makeup with coconut oil and then wash with a gentle gel cleanser (See my whole daily and Weekly Skincare routine here).  Wet your face first, then scoop out a little bit and massage onto your face, adding more as necessary. Scrub in gentle circular directions to exfoliate and cleanse. Wash off with warm water and pat face dry. Store at room temp in a cool, dry place.
