Beauty Faves // Busy Girl Edition

- Beauty

It's no secret I like getting done up, and I've been know to do a multi-step skincare routine, but there are just some days (or even weeks) that all you've got time for is the bare minimum. My bathroom counter is stocked with potions and serums to turn me into a beautiful goddess, but if we're being honest I rarely have time to sit down and methodically go through each recommended portion of a 10-step Korean beauty routine.

What's that you ask? Don't worry...just keep reading, this one's just for you.

6 Products for your Busy Girl Skincare Routine

You might be so busy you're going to read until just after this paragraph and then scroll through the pictures. I get that. Here's a busy girl summary of the products, just in case you want to give them a try:

         1. Peony Cleansing Oil - L'Occitane

         2. Vitamin C Serum Capsules - Exuviance

         3. Ultra HD Foundation - Makeup For Ever

         4. Eye Opening Mascara - Bobbi Brown

         5. Overnight Perfecting Mask - L'Occitane

         6. Dry Shampoo - Hask

For everyone else that might be more in a pizza, Netflix & web surfing mode, let's get started. Here are my favorite products for a minimal beauty routine. P.S. This can also double as a lazy girl beauty routine, hehe.

01 Peony Cleansing Oil - L'Occitane

If you would have told me a couple years ago that oil could be used as a cleanser I wouldn't have believed you. Because back then I had oily skin that was still pretty acne prone, and was avoiding oil at all costs because I thought it would make the problem worse. Turns out, it's actually a solution.

You see, when it comes to cleansing we've got two basic choices. The first one is to use a detergent-like soap that breaks down the oils to wash them away. While this can work for some, it's usual effect is to strip the oil out of our skin entirely, which leaves it dry and possibly inflamed. We then find ourselves overcompensating with moisturizers and other products.

Now I do understand that some of you will never give up your oil-blasting cleansers because you love the squeaky clean feeling. And that's ok! But for the rest of us, there's another option: Use an oil cleanser.

I know what you're thinking. "But won't using oil on my face cause acne?" Oil alone will not cause blemishes. Pimples are a result of several different factors including hormones, bacteria, dead skin cells and the buildup of them. Oil cleansers essentially work by replacing the "old" oil on your skin with "new" oil.

As you massage cleansing oil into your skin, it helps to dissolve the oil that has hardened with impurities and has become stuck in your pores. Cleansing oil is much more gentle and helps keep your skin feeling soft and hydrated. I find when using a cleansing oil, I am able to eliminate a few steps from my skincare routine, like extra moisturizers.

Why I love it:

The peony cleansing oil is my top pick because it's a non-comedogenic formula and it smells absolutely heavenly. It's a top pick for my skincare routine when I'm busy and don't have time for multiple steps, not only because it cleanses and keeps my skin feeling hydrated in just one step but also because it's an easy way to squeeze in a little luxury even when I don't have much time. Besides being effective, the cleansing oil is gorgeous on top of my bathroom counter, with a clear bottle and actual peony petals inside.

02. Vitamin C Serum - Exuviance

There's one thing I never skip in my skincare routine (besides sunscreen) and it's vitamin C. This classic vitamin has all kinds of perks for your skin, but the most prominent is probably protecting your skin from the effects of aging. This is one active ingredient that everyone should work into their skincare routine, no matter what age or stage you're in.

I'm no professional, but in my research there were a few benefits of vitamin C that kept popping up over and over from a few good sources. The first is that vitamin C helps in collagen production. You may have only recently discovered this essential protein, via the fact that recently, everyone seems to be using some sort of collagen powder...often times in their coffee.

Collagen essentially adds firmness and structure to skin, among other things. Our levels of collagen start to decline as early as our 20's & 30's so adding a little topical vitamin C into our routine is a good way to help your skin produce more.

Why I love it:

I love this serum because it's a little thicker than many, has the maximum strength amount of vitamin C, and also contains amino acids + antioxidants. The Exuviance serum comes in pre-portioned capsules which make it super easy to grab & apply on the go. The capsules also protect the vulnerable ingredients in the product from breaking down.

I've been known to allow pretty packaging to strongly influence my skincare purchases in the past. What I didn't know, was that the type of packaging can go a long way in keeping your skincare products effective & preventing the active ingredients from breaking down. If you're busy, just know it's important. If you want the full scoop on what I'm talking about, you can find it here.

03 Ultra HD Foundation - Makeup For Ever

This product was gifted and to be honest I did't think much of it at first. I was excited to try it, but didn't expect it to be a game changer. Spoiler alert: it is.

Now, I won't pretend I fully understand the struggle when it comes to finding the right match for my skin tone. I have friends that have it way harder than me, and I get that. Even still, finding the right match hasn't been super easy. My skin has an olive undertone to it which means most foundations look overly pink or orange even when their right in terms of lightness / darkness.

I've had a few brief successes with a couple brands in the past like Bobbi Brown and others that offer shades with a more yellow undertone, but those were recently blown away by this Makeup For Ever foundation. Here is the crazy part, I didn't even try it in person! I picked my match off the color swatch card online and it was PERFECT. Maybe it's pure luck, and I guess I probably can't promise the same for you (your chances are good, it comes in 40 shades), but I couldn't contain my excitement.

Why I love it:

This foundation is my top pick for the 'no makeup' makeup look. Which for a while, I didn't understand but now I totally do. This look is for when you're busy and don't have time to put on your face but don't exactly want to field the "Are you ok?" / "You look tired." / "Are you feeling sick?" questions all day. Alicia Keys, I totally respect your actual-no-makeup 'no makeup' look, but for this girl, my days just seem to go a lot smoother when I take 2 minutes to put on a little foundation and a coat of mascara.

Ok back to the foundation. It's got great coverage without looking like you layered it on. It does all the important stuff like blend & build really well.

04 Eye Opening Mascara - Bobbi Brown

Even on the busiest of days, mascara is a must. This eye opening mascara is my daily go-to when I don't need anything crazy like a hi-glam formula or waterproof option. I'm going to be honest, most mascaras for me all kind of seem the same. I mean, sure some of them last longer or have a better brush, but there's never really that big of a difference.

The fact that I'm on my third tube of this stuff means it's stood out as a must-have. I even just bought a travel-size version and was pleasantly surprised to find that it came with the same jumbo brush.

Why I love it:

I really like the jumbo brush. I feel like it helps grab each and every lash and actually coat it instead of just leaving a layer on the front of the lash, but it's also not so big that it doesn't work well like some I've run into. The formula is also long-lasting so I don't have to re-apply. On busy days I just don't have time for that.

05 Overnight Perfecting Mask - L'Occitane

I know I'm doubling up on the Peony Collection here, but I'm just pretty obsessed with it right now.

So this mask makes the busy girl list for obvious reasons: it does it's job while you sleep. I don't know about you, but most of the overnight mask I've tried in the past have been HEAVY. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong, but a goopy face doesn't help me sleep.

Why I love it:

It's non-oily and smells AMAZING. It works overnight so that you wake up with fresh and bright skin that feels hydrated and ready to tackle your crazy to-do list. I'm also a huge fan of the single use pods because they're super easy to travel with and I can also take them on long flights to use while I'm napping on the plane.

P.S. This mask is part of a trio, and both the other ones are super great as well. You can get the variety pack here if you want to test them all out before seeing which you like best.

06 Dry Shampoo - Hask

Dry shampoo is a must-have in any busy girl beauty routine. When there's simply no time for a wash + blowout everyday but you want your hair to look like it's freshly done, dry shampoo can work miracles. It can be a challenge to find a good one, and when you do you don't let it out of your sight (the quote on this tote is totally true).  Some are too sticky or too cakey or don't smell great. Hask has got all of those problems beat. Its been my go-to for the past 3 months and I don't see myself switching anytime soon.

Why I love it:

Dry shampoo can be...well, drying. What I really like about the Hask line is that they have a couple products which are infused with oils so that they are more moisturizing, but still effective. My top two favorites are the Coconut Oil formula and the Argon Oil version. They also smell wonderful.

What are your beauty must-haves even on the busiest of days?

Are there any of these you want to try?

Mini Spa: When Masks

- Beauty
when face mask | skin care | skin treatment | paper face mask | korean beauty treatment | korean skin care

I love a good at-home spa treatment. Being able to pamper yourself in your comfy clothes (with some wine) at home is just the perfect way to end the day.

One of my favorite mini spa treatments is a good sheet mask. Not only is it a quick way to get in a little self-care, it's amazingly simple and doesn't take much effort - which is just the type of thing I need after a long day. The fact that I don't have to spend the time washing it off afterwards makes it my ideal 'treat-yo-self' skin care.

...And let's be real, though super effective, sheet masks look ridiculous - so I definitely wont be leaving the couch.

So how to pick a good sheet mask? This one can be tricky. There are OH SO MANY options that boast amazing results. I've tried everything from drug store snags to pricey options and while I've found a few favorites, the WHEN mask line is one that consistently impresses me.

So what are WHEN masks? The company was started by a Korean healthcare specialist who brought together a dermatologist, a biologist, and a botanist to create skincare that was gentle and effective. His goal was to bring quality skincare from spas & dermatologists into modern, busy lifestyles. The result was skincare that has the good stuff - like natural moisturizers and protecting nutrients. I'd say he did a pretty good job.

Why are we obsessed with Korean skincare right now? An easy answer is that Koreans are known for their glowing skin and 10-step routines and if that's what it takes, we want it. Another reason might be that when it comes to talking beauty, the answer often seems to come from some magical concoction that's made it's way from the East. Oil cleansers, brightening serums, and oh so many other products you probably use everyday have origins in the East. They probably know what they're doing, but at the very least they've been up to it for 1000's of years.

Hairstory + New Wash

- Beauty, Reviews
new wash | shampoo | all in one | sud free shampoo | nopoo | hair care | best shampoo | best hair products | oil based shampoo | all in one shampoo and conditioner | hair repair

Confession time. I don't wash my hair everyday....ok, many times not even every other day.  I know, I know, you're probably thinking, "Ew, why?"

And honestly its a mix of things. My hair is super thick and awkwardly curly...like, not the kind of cute bouncy curls that look effortless and perfect. No, these curls are in all the wrong places and go all the wrong ways. It's a lot of effort to deal with the whole wash-dry-and-style cycle on a daily basis.

Plus, it takes even more effort to get moisture to stick around here in Denver. I'm talking a leave-in conditioner, an oil, and then some texturizer. That's all before the whole styling process (bleh).

So once I get all that product in there and layered perfectly to lock in moisture, I'm going to try to make it last me a couple days at the least. Once its time to wash, I felt like I needed some sudsy shampoo to really clean all the layers of product off my hair.

Could a detergent free shampoo really work for my hair?

So, when Hairstory reached out and offered my a bottle of their New Wash, which is detergent free shampoo, I was a little skeptical.

Now, I'm all about trying new things, but I had given "no-poo" formulas a shot in the past and they always seemed to leave my hair feeling greasy and heavy with product. With my skepticism in tow, I committed to using just New Wash for 30 days.

New Wash: My Hair Story

After washing the first day, I was surprised to find that my hair felt super soft and retained moisture for a while after only washing it. I wanted to give the New Wash a chance to show me what it could do, so I skipped extra styling products like oil and texturizer for the first week. I was impressed. My hair felt soft and looked healthy and not damaged.

Here's the crazy thing. I learned that by using detergent based shampoos, I was stripping my hair of natural moisture and causing some damage, which I then had to apply 2-4 moisturizing products to "fix"

It turns out all the products I thought I needed to give my hair moisture and shine that lasted, were just because I had taken all the natural moisture and shine away from my hair in the first place by using harsh shampoo.

So, not only does my hair feel better and healthier, I've also eliminated about 5 steps from my whole hair care routine. And for a girl that doesn't like washing her hair until it's been (way) too long,  I'd call that a lazy girl win.

new wash | shampoo | all in one | sud free shampoo | nopoo | hair care | best shampoo | best hair products | oil based shampoo | all in one shampoo and conditioner | hair repair
new wash | shampoo | all in one | sud free shampoo | nopoo | hair care | best shampoo | best hair products | oil based shampoo | all in one shampoo and conditioner | hair repair

If you're brave enough to ditch your detergent and give Hairstory's New Wash a try, here's some things you should know.

First, it might take your hair a couple days to adjust. By constantly washing your hair with shampoo that strips, it teaches your skin it needs to make more oils to compensate for all that is being stripped, so you basically have to re-train your skin and give it time to go back to normal.

NOTE: I'm not a professional, so this is my non-sciency understanding of how this works.

This means your hair might feel heavy the first couple of days to a week or so, but just give it time because I promise it's worth it.

Next, here's some details about the product. It's got essential oils and naturally-derived cleansers, plus a nice pump bottle which helps you get just the right amount. Another thing to note is a little goes a long way. I'm not even half way through the bottle and I've been using it for 30 days.

Harrys: a good shave isn’t just for the boys

- Beauty
harrys razor | best razor | close shave | mens razor for her | pink tax | better razor for her | skincare | why i use a mens razor | ditch venus razor | cheaper razor blades

Ok ladies, it's time for a little real talk. It's hard to be a girl. We have to put up with a ton of sh*t guys don't.

For example, the 'pink tax.'  If you're not familiar, the pink tax is basically the idea that products which are made for / marketed to women (for example, self care products) oftentimes cost more than the same product when marketed to men. The name "pink tax' comes from the fact that the items marketed toward women and sold at a higher price are often pink.

I'm not here to get political, I'm just here to offer a solution: buy the men's product. It seriously isn't very different, it works just as well (sometimes better) and it costs less.  If you're like me, that idea seemed silly at first. One reason is because I really love pink, cute things. Another reason is because the marketing really works.

I constantly catch myself watching a commercial and subtly thinking that if I just had that product, I'd be more beautiful, more confident, or have a better life.

I mean, just watch this women's razor commercial compared to this men's one

harrys razor | best razor | close shave | mens razor for her | pink tax | better razor for her | skincare | why i use a mens razor | ditch venus razor | cheaper razor blades

The commercial for women sells you on a lifestyle: one of beauty, friends and adventure. It tells you that this is a choice you have: you can just shave and be normal, or you can 'choose to smooth' and live a glamorous and adventurous life. Not to mention, the razor in the commercial was shaving a hairless leg. Trying to sell me a razor, but dont want to show how it actually would work to give me a smooth shave?

The men's commercial shows you some of the elements of the razor itself and then flashes to a regular guy shaving in his bathroom. Way more cut-and-dry as far as showing you what the razor does. (If you want to dive a little deeper into the different ways men & women are advertised to, this article illustrates it well,  this article and this article have some good info.)

I'm on my phone 24/7, advertisers can have a field day with me.

For real though. From the social apps I check more than once daily, to surfing the web. And it works. I'm constantly finding myself about to add a product to my Amazon cart after seeing an ad, and I've had to start checking myself, "Do I really want this product, or do I want the lifestyle the ad told me comes with it?"

harrys razor | best razor | close shave | mens razor for her | pink tax | better razor for her | skincare | why i use a mens razor | ditch venus razor | cheaper razor blades

Why does this matter?

As women, we are constantly battling insecurities. It's so easy to get sucked into the comparison game and feel inadequate when you look at those around you on social media and real life.

You might think ads don't affect you, but the truth is they are all around us all the time telling us we need to do X to be better, prettier, skinnier, or buy _____ product to make us more beautiful and help us achieve the life we dream of.

That constant message of insufficiency and inadequacy can wear on you. It's important to be able to look at ad in the face, understand what it's trying to sell you on - other than the product - and be able to think critically and not be swayed by the message that if you just had _______, your life would be better.

harrys razor | best razor | close shave | mens razor for her | pink tax | better razor for her | skincare | why i use a mens razor | ditch venus razor | cheaper razor blades

HARRY'S

So, if you can't tell from these photos, I've recently changed up my razor game. I had been using venus for a few years because I had been sold on the idea that I needed this special pretty purple razor for my special lady curves. Turns out, Harry's razors work just as good, if not better and are WAY cheaper.

A Venus swirl razor is $12.99 and a pack of 4 replacement blades runs ya $21.49 at Target. A Harry's razor is $9.99 and 4-pack of replacement blades is $7.99. That means Harry's costs almost 48% less than Venus, or about $16.50

Yes, the razors are marketed toward men. Yes, they come in orange, blue, and green. Surprisingly, the color of the razor has little affect on the hair removal process.

And if you don't like blue, orange, or green, you can go for the shave set Harry's sent me with a chrome handle that is sleek or this copper one. It's not just a pink tax thing, its also a big razor thing. If you want to see what I mean, just watch this video about how Harry's is changing shaving.

Does Lipsense live up to the hype?

- Beauty, Reviews
lipsense | long lasting lip color | best lipstick | lip color | matte lipstick | red lipstick

First things first, and that's a little honesty: I'd been avoiding lipsense a little.

It was mostly because everyone I barely talked to in high school had been messaging me on facebook asking if they could sell me some, but it was also a little bit because it seemed like it had too much hype.

Everyone was raving about it just a little too much, to the point where it seemed too good to be true. Let me just tell you something, it's not.

I'm a lipstick girl. Classic red was my daily thing for years through college, and I'm currently loving super bright shades like hot pink and bright purple. I've tried every "longwear, all-day, apocolypse-proof" lipstick out there. And nothing stays all day. In fact, I usually have to apply at least 3-4 times.

When Kayla from Running with Colors reached out and asked if I wanted to give it a try, it was hard to say no. I tucked my skepticism away and decided to give it a whorl. At the very least, I would be able to crack the case on whether it was too good to be true.

Kayla asked me what shades I'm normally drawn to, then decided I should try out the blu-red - which is a super bright matte red that has cool tones. (P.S. She nailed it. This bright red is my favorite signature shade.)

Ugh. I hate it when you wear lip stuff because I can't kiss you" - Rich, my husband (over and over every time I wear lipstick)

Kayla sent me the color, gloss, and remover plus a little video she made about how to apply it. I followed her steps carefully, and then proceeded to put my lips to the test and see if I could get it to come off. I couldn't. I tried the kiss-my-hand test, drinking coffee, eating a popsicle (ok, actually 3), and it stuck around for all of it.

It's also made the hubs just a little happier since he isn't getting lipstick stains all over his face when he kisses me. Win-win.

Overall, I've honestly got nothing bad to say about Lipsense. It definitely lived up to the hype and surprised me. I'm currently eyeing up the 'purple reign' shade to continue my super bright kick I've been on for summer, and I've got a feeling this is just the start and I am on my way to a full-blown collection.

All of you Lipsense fans out there are probably giggling at me because I'm late to the party. I'll admit, I'm just kind of stubborn, but so glad I'm finally on board.

Photofacials, Spin for Perfect Skin & my summer beauty routine

- Beauty, Reviews
vanity planet | exfoliator | spin brush | exfoliating brush |dry brush | spin for perfect skin

It's officially feeling like summer with all this sunshine and warm weather. Since I did a whole skincare series (No 01 | No 02 | No 03 | No 04) back in January with a post all about my skincare routine and tips for how to load up on moisture for the dry, cold weather, I've reviewed a ton of messages asking whether my routine has changed and if I do things differently for summer. It's time to talk about my current routine: what's changed, what I'm loving, and how I've updated my routine for summer.

My skincare routine is constantly changing and evolving as I try new things.

On a monthly basis, I have a lot of products going in and out of my circle of favorites. I love trying new things, so as I keep up with my beauty blogger besties, I'm constantly swapping in some of their most highly recommended products into my routine. Not only that, but I also get sent a wide variety of products by different brands to try out and share my experience with. Let me tell you, some of them are try-it-once-and-fall-in-love amazing, and some are well....meh.

But first, the Photofacial

Before we chat about my new routine and what products are in my favorites circle, let me first tell you about a facial I had recently that is a GAME CHANGER. This is important because I feel like it has really changed my skin and gave me a clean slate to build a new and improved skin care routine from. So the facial I'm talking about is an "Intense Pulsed Light" (IPL) or Photo facial

I never even knew this was a thing until I went to Vitahl in Denver for a consultation and they suggested I try it. Essentially, this facial uses light pulses to target damaged skin cells, dark spots, and redness. These damaged cells come to the surface and are cleared, which leaves skin looking younger and less damaged.

I chose to do this treatment because I had a lot of sun (read: tanning bed) damage and spots from my high school and college years, plus a few broken capillaries around my eyes plus redness on my cheeks (not the cute rosy kind).

The whole process was simple. They cleansed my skin, applied a cooling gel and gave me some protective eyewear. Each of the little light pulse felt like someone snapping a rubber band on my face. It wasn't comfortable, but it wasn't too painful. Afterwards, my skin felt super sensitive and a little red, and I had to be careful with it for a couple weeks after while it healed.

It's been about 4 weeks and my skin is noticeably smoother, has no redness, the dark spots are  either gone or substantially improved, and my pores are so much smaller. I totally forgot to take a before and after picture, which I'm still kicking myself for because the difference was major.

So fresh, so clean

I tell you all this because getting this treatment was a turning point for me. No, it's not a magic bullet that cured all my skincare woes, but seeing the transformation and improvement in my skin plus taking the time to chat with a professional about my routine and the types of things I should be doing in order to make my skin look and feel it's best was so encouraging.

I'm guilty of putting trust in every new and improved product that promises to do big things for my skin, and find myself feeling let down and a little stuck when it doesn't deliver. It made me realize that there are a ton of amazing products out there, but just are few are the ones that are going to be perfect for my skin and routine.

All that being said, here are my favorites, but don't get bogged down with suggestion overload. Just because these are my drop-dead favorites, doesn't mean they are going to be perfect for you. My best advice...go get a sample before you buy them! Sephora will give you three free samples each trip, so take advantage of that.

Summer Skincare Routine

My primary focus for summer is protecting my skin from the sun and heat. This means a serious sunscreen regimen, packing on antioxidants to protect skin from UV rays, good exfoliation to keep dirt and sweat away, and a nighttime retinoid. So let's break this down:

MORNING

1. Wash my face with FRESH Soy Face Cleansing Milk

This cleanser is very gentle and soothing, so it's a perfect start to the morning. It cleanses without stripping, smells like cucumber and has amino-acid rich soy proteins to support elasticity.

Lazy Day Option: Cleanse with ALBA Botanica 3-in-1 Face Wipes - These smell awesome and have pineapple enzyme to exfoliate and cleanse.

2. Apply Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day Serum

I can't tell you how much I love this stuff. It's packed with Vitamin C and antioxidants to protect skin from sun damage and free radicals. Vitamin C is an anti-aging must-have to firm and brighten, and it's suggested for everyone, whether as a preventative or anti-aging regimen. They also have this in a little travel / test size here.

3. Apply Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Hydration Gel OR Nip + Fab Dragon's Blood Hylaronic Shot

Just because it's summer doesn't mean you can skip the hydration. I switch to lighter hydration products instead of heavy creams and lotions. I like both these hydration gels equally, so I switch between them depending on the day. They both give moisture without weight or feeling greasy. The Nip & Fab shot has hylaronic acid, which is amazingly hydrating. The B-Hydra gel has vitamin B5 and pineapple ceramide to attract / boost moisture. It also comes in that little travel-size duo.

Lazy Day Option: Apply June Jacobs Neroli Hydrating Mist - This stuff smells amazing and gives my skin a quick and easy hydration boost.

4. Apply Elta MD Sunscreen & Let dry

If you do nothing else do this!!! Seriously. I got a wakeup call through the photofacial process when I realized just how much sun damage my skin had at just age 24! Luckily, the facial was pretty effective at reversing some of that, but I'm finally committed to a no-exceptions sunscreen routine. You don't have to eat your veggies, but you do have to wear your sunscreen. I like this Elta MD sunscreen because it's tinted, non-greasy and offers SPF 41. Another favorite is the COOLA Classic sunscreen in the cucumber scent.

5. Apply makeup

EVENING

1. Rub in CLINIQUE 'Take the Day Off' Cleansing Balm to melt away makeup, wipe off with cotton round.

I used to like to use coconut oil to do this, but I got a sample of Clinique's makeup remover and fell in love. It is a balm that melts into an oil in your hands and does literally melt of your makeup. It's great for anything waterproof, which I find myself wearing pretty often in the summer. I also love this product because you just have to use a little bit to get all the day's makeup off.

2. Wash my face with FRESH Soy Face Cleanser + Exfoliate with the 'Spin to Perfect Skin' by Vanity Planet

The Cleanser gives a deeper cleanse than their cleansing milk, but is still gentle enough to use everyday. It has the same amazing smell also. I love to use it with my spin brush from Vanity Planet, which I'm going to share all about (+ a 70% off coupon) next. I get the brush wet and apply some cleanser directly to it, then give my face a good scrub.

3.  Apply Hydropeptide Nimni Cream

This is my hands down favorite night cream, which is funny because it was gifted and I don't think I would have thought to buy it for myself. It's got retinol, which is best to apply at night since it becomes ineffective in the sun and can also make your skin more sensitive to burning. I really love how this cream smells and it also has some other good vitamins and antioxidants for an extra anti-aging punch.

4. Apply Farmacy Sleep Tight Serum

I let the Nimni Cream dry, then apply this lightly if my skin feels like it needs some extra moisture. It's oil based, so I usually apply a little on just the areas that are feeling dry instead of smothering it all over. I'm a big fan of all of Farmacy's products. If you want a little into before you commit to the full-size, they have a discovery kit here.

Spin for Perfect Skin

My current favorite beauty tool is Vanity Planet's 'Spin for Perfect Skin' brush.  I love this system because it uses the same handle with interchangeable brushes. The set comes with two different facial brushes: one for daily cleansing and one for deeper exfoliating. I use the deep exfoliating brush about 2-3x a week, and the regular one every night.

There is also a larger body brush which I actually use a lot for dry brushing before my shower, plus a pumice stone for smooth heels.

If you'd like to take this exfoliation kit for a spin (paha) and add it into your beauty routine you can use coupon code BBSFPS70 for 70% off this brush or any of the ones you see HERE. I know, crazy right? Plus, they have a 60 day money-back promise, so if it doesn't work for you, no sweat.

My Smile Story

- Beauty, Lifestyle
teeth whitening | at home teeth whitening | Smile Brilliant | Custom teeth Whitening trays | whitening gel | best teeth whitener | At home custom whitening

Time to talk about smiles. Cue all the cheesey smile quotes here about how a smile is the best thing you can wear, they never go out of style, they're the best first impression you can ever leave, etc.

But in all honesty, my smile is one of the main things that helps me feel confident and beautiful.

As a little bit of an introvert, I find myself hiding behind my smile when meeting new people. I'm also one for humor, so when you meet me there's a chance we'll be joking and laughing in no time.

My Smile

I'm proud of my smile now for the most part, but that wasn't always the case. Growing up, I had a giant gap between my two front teeth. I can still remember being super embarrassed about it in elementary school. One small surgery and two rounds of braces later, my smile is straight and something I'm finally happy to flash.

Even with my gap gone, my smile could still use a little improvement. The current obstacle in my smile journey is keeping my teeth bright and stain-free.

It's no secret I'm in love with coffee and wine. But really, who isn't.

I'd been searching for an easy and effective way to tackle stains. I have a thousand other steps in my beauty routine, and I didn't have time to mess with adding another complicated one. I tried a variety of options, but with bulky devices, strips that didn't stay put, and one-size fits all trays that didn't quite fit, I gave up and went back to relying on whitening toothpaste to keep my teeth bright. It wasn't super effective, but it was easy.

Then, Smile Brilliant reached out to me to see if I would be interested in trying out their custom trays. A professional quality whitening system without the dentist office visit?  I was intrigued.

P.S. If you follow me on Instagram, I told you all about it on my story about a month ago. Also, just because I know you're going to ask, my lippie is the Ultra HD Matte Lip Color, in "Obsession." It's by Revlon and is under $10

Smile Brilliant

The process was super easy. They send you a kit and you make your own molds, which was actually pretty fun. You mail those back and your custom whitening trays are made and delivered to you in a couple weeks. From there, you use the whitening gel that comes in syringes (which last 3-4 sessions) and whiten away.

I seriously love how easy it is. The whole system is the perfect balance of easy and effective, so I was a no brainer as far as deciding whether it was worth it to add to my beauty routine. I'm in.

You leave the trays in for about 45min-3 hours, so I honestly just wear them out and about while I'm grocery shopping or running errands. You can't really tell you're wearing them, similar to Invisalign or clear braces. I also expected them to be hard plastic like my retainers from high school, but they are made of a soft clear plastic that's actually pretty comfy. I constantly forget I have them in.

Before & After

I've been whitening every other day for about two and a half weeks, and I'm happy with the results. I'm now a believer that custom trays are the only way to whiten, it's just not worth the hassle to try to mess with anything else. Just see what you think of the results:

Friday Favorites: Beauty Edition

- Beauty, Reviews
skincare | Skincare favorites | Best skincare products | Hydropeptide | retinol cream | coola sunscreen | eye cream | nip & fab Bee Sting | June Jacobs Spa

Happy Friday! I've received a few questions about some of the beauty products that have been on my Instagram lately, so it seemed like the perfect time to do a skincare product faves roundup! If you are looking for my current makeup faves, you can read all about them in this Spring Beauty Faves post.

01. June Jacobs Trio

I hadn't had the chance to try out any June Jacobs products, but they sent me this trio and I've fallen in love. The packaging is gorgeous, everything smells amazing, and the products are wonderful.

Neroli Hydrating Mist

This toner mist is a perfect addition to your purse for summer. You can use it as part of your skincare routine in the morning and evening, or throughout the day to keep you skin feeling fresh. It includes Neroli oil to help revive skin cells and red and green tea to protect skin against free radicals.

Rapid Repair Healing Cream

I'm a sucker for a good moisturizer. I tried this one out on both my face and body, and really liked it. It's long-lasting, but not overly greasy or heavy which means it has that goldilocks consistency. I hate heavy lotions, but I also hate lotions that are too light and seem to only provide moisture the first 5 min I have it on.

Lip Renewal

I love this lip balm! It's not waxy and makes my lips feel like they are actually getting moisture instead of just getting coated. The balm also has a blend of peach, jojoba and coconut oils plus shea and cocoa butters for moisture. Other great ingredients are vitamin E, peptides, and hyaluronic acid.

02. Nip & Fab Bee Sting Duo

Yes, these products contain actual bee venom to help plump skin.  Nip & Fab sent me both plumping shot and the  bee sting fix eye cream. The serum (aka shot) is great because I can layer it under my night cream or mix a few drops into my current favorite moisturizer.  If you fall in love, the bee sting line also has a lifting mask, cleansing pads, and body souffle.

03. Coola Sunscreen

If you've been around this blog for a while, you've probably heard me rave about this stuff. It was on my list for beach essentials and I bought the whole travel set with minis to pack for my honeymoon. I love the cucumber scented kind the best for my face, but the unscented kind is my backup. For body, the pina colada spray is my go-to. It's just so tropical and beachy.

I recently learned from my dermatologist that just counting on the sunscreen in your makeup isn't enough. It's a good plus, but you should apply an actual sunscreen or moisturizer with sunscreen as it's own step, whether that's all you're wearing or as part of your pre-makeup skincare routine.

04. Hydropeptide Nimni Cream

I recently have been doing a little research about preventative skincare, and one of the themes that kept coming up was incorporating a retinol cream into your routine as early as your 20's. So I added this Nimni Cream into my skincare routine as a night cream. It 's got amino acids to help with collagen production and also packs Vitamin C & E. I've been really impressed with my results so far. I feel like my skin is brighter and looks more refreshed.

Just a little pro tip: when you start using a product with retinol, it's best to start 1-2x per week and then work up to using it daily since it can make your skin sensitive. You should also be careful about which products you are using with your retinol cream, since some combinations can cause redness and irritation.

Summer Blonde Highlights + Hask Hair Giveaway

- Beauty, Reviews
argon oil shampoo | best deep conditioner | hair repair | hair mask | hair product favorites | hask hair

I think Katy perry might be my hair spirit animal. Wigs or the real thing, she's always got something fun going on up top. If I could be constantly whipping my hair into a new style, color, and cut every day (or even multiple times a day) I totally would.

I'm not on Katy's level, but I try to change my style up at least fairly often to keep things interesting. I kept my hair my natural dark brown color for our wedding, just because I didn't want to make any rash hairstyle decisions that I would look at in wedding photos 20 years from now and regret.

Once wedding day was over, I decided it was time for a new lighter summer style. My hair is pretty dark, so it takes a few sessions to get it light. I'm not quite done yet, but I'm showing off a little before and after to show you the progress, sharing a few favorite products that I'm using to keep my looks silky and soft, and spreading the love a little with a hair mask giveaway.

CURRENT HAIR PRODUCT FAVORITES

Let's talk about these awesome products from Hask that are currently in my shower, then we'll get to the giveaway and big reveal of my new look.

1. Orchid & White Truffle Shampoo & Conditioner

Between the dry Denver climate and my newly-added blonde, my hair needs all the moisture I can get. This duo is extra rich and free of most all of the bad stuff (sulfates, parabens, phthalates, gluten, drying alcohol and artificial colors). I did notice some added shine to my locks compared to the shampoo and conditioner I had been using.

Oh, and it also smells super good, and if you're anything like me, a lovely smell is near the top of the list as far as deciding which hair products to buy.

2. Coconut Milk & Organic Honey Hair Mask

I've never really been that into hair masks...until now. My first experience with them was after moving to Colorado and getting some first hand experience with how a dry climate really can suck the moisture right out of my hair. I used to complain about my hair being a ball of frizz in the southern humidity, but in Denver it's totally bleh...aka dry and flat. I'd take the crazy volume from the humidity any day.

This mask is one of the first things I've tried that gives my hair lasting softness even after it's totally dry from the shower. I've been on a little bit of a pre-summer coconut kick lately, so this mask was a great fit for my routine. It's actually something I can use daily since my hair gets SO dry. Although, for friends with healthier locks, this would probably work best for using 1-3 times a week.

3. Blue Chamomile with Argon Oil Blonde Hair Mask

My one tip with hair masks would be not to use the same one every time. My favorite (above) is one I use daily, then add this blue chamomile one into the rotation about once or twice a week.

It's formulated just for blonde, to neutralize brassy and yellow tones. The mask also has argon oil to help moisturize hair that might be dry or brittle due to lightening. They also have a shampoo and conditioner from this formula line available as well.

MY NEW LIGHTER LOOK

Disclosures: (1) It's not totally done: I'm still going to go lighter & it needs a cut...like real bad (2) You can't really get a feel for how awesome it looks IRL, because of these iPhone pics, but you can go creep on my insta story to see it in motion or stay tuned for some upcoming posts to see some better photos.

My stylist was Gaby from the ZenSalon in Denver and she was so much fun. I gave her a huge arm workout with all my hair, but she did an amazing job. I can't wait to go back and let her finish her work to make it perfect.

Wedding Ready: Lash Extensions (first time) at Wax & Lash

- Beauty
eyelash extentions | Lash extentions | Lashes | Fake Eyelashes | should i get fake eyelashes

There's just so much to do to get wedding ready, but in just one morning at Wax & Lash, I checked some of the big priority items off the list.  Wax & Lash has been my go-to waxing salon for a while. It was convenient when I worked in downtown Denver, and even though I don't anymore, they've still got a garage and validate parking plus it's a good excuse to spend an hour moseying around Larimer Square

Wax & lash

I fell in love with this salon the first time I walked in. The ambiance is so relaxing, from the beautiful decor to the calming aromatherapy. Every service feels spa-like and they truly go out of their way to make sure you are not only comfortable, but have space to relax and unwind.

Everyone is always so sweet and personal, you never feel like just another appointment. I love their waxing services, because the environment doesn't feel cold & sterile (you know, like the places with Dr's office paper on the table and strobe lights in your face like it's surgery) plus they somehow manage to make you feel pampered while still being efficient.

I could go on and on about how much I'd love to spend an afternoon even just sitting in the welcome room, but let's talk about these lashes.

So, I've never had lash extensions until now, and to be honest I was a little unsure at first about the whole thing. I wasn't sure about letting someone so close to my eyes, armed with glue and sharp tweezers, but my upcoming wedding convinced me it was time to give it a shot.

I'm so glad I decided to take the leap, and now I don't think I can go back. First of all, the lashes added volume while looking amazingly natural. No more DIY lashes popping off on the ends or showing a line every time I blink.

I also love that I don't feel like I have to "put my face on" every morning. I used to never leave the house without at least wearing liner and mascara, but I have been going without eye makeup for a few days now and it has been amazing! I've eliminated a few steps from my morning routine, and don't have to worry about re-applying or fixing smudges. I'm the queen of roll-out-of-bed-and-go, and these lashes have made it just that much easier.

The Process

My esthetician, Sarah, welcomed me and helped me get comfy. The whole room was set up to help me unwind: the music selection was perfect, the table was so comfortable it feels silly to be calling it a table, because it was more like a bed. I was also offered a hot water bottle to help me settle in and de-stress, which was a nice touch. There was even a snuggly blanket to keep my toes warm. They really do think of everything here.

Sarah explained the process and took some before photos. She placed some gel eye pads under my eyes to help hold my lower lashes down, which felt nice and cool (and actually prompted me to go order like 12 of these). She explained the pads also create a surface for her to work on, and to let her know if they became uncomfortable. Sarah also mentioned that it would be a good idea to tell her if I needed to like, sneeze since she was going to be working with some sharp tweezers. Noted.

Then we got to work. I expected to feel a lot of tugging and maybe even a little discomfort as she carefully separated a single one of my lashes and glued an extension to it, but I was surprised to realize I could barely feel a thing. We chatted a little about my upcoming wedding, and she answered just about every question I could think of about lashes and how the process works. She also joked that a few people have fallen asleep during the appointment, which I thought was comical until I almost did as well. It was hard to fight it, the whole thing was just so darn relaxing. I think the only reason I stayed awake was because I couldn't wait to see the finished result.

This appointment took about two hours, which flew by. When Sarah handed me the mirror, I couldn't believe how natural and beautiful my lashes looked.

The results

I mean, just look at them. They're the perfect balance between glam and natural.

Safe to say I'm addicted, and luckily they aren't too difficult to keep up with. I can come in for a relash as often as weekly, or just get a fill every month. After the initial appointment, the fill appointments are shorter (and also less expensive) so I'm thinking I'll try to keep up with them.

After an influx of questions in response to my lashe insta story, I also roped Sarah into doing a mini Q&A with me to answer the top 5 questions everyone was asking:

Questions about getting lashes for the first time? Here are answers to the top 5:
