Black & White and Blush All Over // Fall Style

FALL TRANSITION LOOKS

Fall transition looks seem to be all we talk about around this time of year. How do you take your summer wardrobe into fall and put a look together for when it's cool but not cold one day and it's warm but not hot the next?

The easiest solution to this? Wear seasonally neutral colors and pick out a look that's got options so you can adapt it to temperature changes.

What is a seasonally neutral color? A color that works with any time of year. Black and white are the most obvious choices (yes, the "no white after labor day" rule is officially bullsh*t), but other colors like light pink and navy are great options too. Blush is probably my favorite pick because it looks great on just about every skintone and adds a feminine & chic feel to your outfit with just about no effort. Seriously, get yourself a blush tee and pair it with denim and a simple pendant necklace and you'll see what I mean.

Choosing seasonless colors for your fall transition looks means you won't be left wearing springy florals in November because your city is unseaonably warm, where everyone else across the country is dressing for snow. Other tips for choosing seasonless colors are to think about patterns. Things like black and white stripes or polka dots work any day, but if you're planning on wearing a floral print, springy colors probably aren't your best bet.

Ok, so how do you pick a look that you can easily adapt to temperature changes? Start with a stand alone look that works for warmer temps, then build a warmer look by adding layers that you can bring with you just in case it cools down. Cute layering options can be hard to come by - it's tempting to just throw on a puffy coat or giant hoodie because they're warm and convenient.

When shopping for pieces to warm up an outfit, look for layers that are effective at keeping you warm but are still structured. Quilted vests and jackets like the black and white one I've got on are my best tip since they've got a lot of insulation but have a sleeker silhouette because the quilting keeps the puffiness at bay.

FAVORITE FALL COLORS

If fall has settled in in your area and you no longer care about transition looks, then go all out with the red, oranges, and yellows. If I had to pick a favorite fall color combo my pick would be mustard yellow paired with either maroon or navy blue. If you want to be super on trend, "power red" is this years color trend for fall. You can check out this post for the full scoop on the top 5 fall trends.

Of course, if you're not into color much at all then the seasonless colors we talked about before are probably all you're ever wearing regardless of the temperature. In this case, you'll want to look to textures and monochrome patterns to add interest to your look and make a statement. Mix sleek and feminine by contrasting things like leather and lace or suede and ruffles.

A little about this shoot

A lot of you have been asking for a little peak behind the scenes and have wanted a little insight into my outfit shoots. I'm going to do my best to give you a little behind the scenes look for each post, but sometimes we might skip it because its honestly not always glamorous. It usually includes me dragging my hubby somewhere I think is cute and then running back and forth between him and the camera to see if we've got the perfect shot. Other times, it entails me working with a photographer in which case he gets a break.

I shot this outfit at NYFW outside the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum which is where Style Fashion Week held their shows. Never would have guessed I would have attended a fashion show on an aircraft carrier, but it turned out to be an incredible experience. This transition look was shot with two different photographers, Baris, who shot the look jacket-on look before the show and then Nevenka who shot the jacket-off look after the show during golden hour.

About the look

I know your first question, "Where did I you this jacket?!" It's from a boutique in Breckenridge, CO that I visited during my recent fall day trip (read all about it HERE) I don't think it is available online, but I do know she's mailed pieces to non-local customers in the past so feel free to see if she has your size in stock (Vintage Sweet and Chic Boutique).

Since the jacket style is short, I paired it with a blush peplum top which is seriously my new favorite layered look. I added some distressed high-waist black skinnies to add a little balance to the feminine feel. For accessories I added a layered gold choker as a statement piece along with these gorgeous earrings from Kendra Scott that I actually got in my September RocksBox. I gave this look a little fall flair by adding in some maroon with these Steve Madden Velvet Booties and this tassel clutch.

How are you transitioning your wardrobe for cold weather? What's your favorite seasonless color?

Fall Trends // Neiman Marcus Runway

- Events, Fashion
fall trends | velvet looks for fall | fall plaid | metallic prints | plaid maxi | neiman marcus runway | red for fall | fall booties | fall transition looks | winter style | fall style | cherry creek denver

Time to talk fall trends.

Even if your go-to every year is a PSL, leggings, and plaid, you'll still want to be in the loop for those days when you need to be chic, effortless, and on the edge of all the great trends happening this fall.

First let's chat about my top 5 must-haves for this season, inspired by this runway collection, then I'll show you a couple shoppable looks to illustrate. Ready?

This Season's Must haves:

01 Reds

If you haven't heard, red is the color of the season. We're not talking muted maroon, bright bold red is in and I promise it's a color everyone can pull off. Whether it's a fun & flirty day dress with tights, or a geometric top with ruffles & harsh lines, the trick to wearing red is picking a silhouette that fits your style.

STYLIST TIP: Red isn't a one-shade-fits all. Red comes in different hues, meaning you can pick a red that compliments your skintone or haircolor. Pick a warmer red if your skin's undertone is warmer, and choose a blue-red if you lean more toward the cooler side. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, read this.

02 The Leather Jacket

Most people either love it or avoid it altogether. It's no secret I'm a huge fan of leather (see what I mean here). If you haven't quite committed to a leather jacket as a staple piece in your wardrobe, this is the season is the time to do it.

STYLIST TIP: If leather intimidates you, don't be afraid to mix and match. Layer a leather jacket over a feminine dress, or pair with a blush floral top and denim for a softer look. Leather jackets have been a staple for some time, primarily because they're SO easy to dress up and down. Not to mention they make every outfit, casual or chic, look just a little more polished. Still lost? Go scroll through this article, then pop back here.

03 Velvet

Ah, velvet. It's a classic in the truest sense of the word...we're talking a trend among nobility as early as 1399. What does this mean for this season? Because velvet has been around awhile, it is fluid in terms of the style and personality it conveys. While the fabric itself consistently gives off a luxe feel, the cut and pairing of the piece determines a more specific style direction.

STYLIST TIP: Explore all the options. From blazers to cut-outs to clutches, absolutely everyone can find a unique and fitting way to rock this trend. I've got an affinity for velvet dresses this season, especially in a light navy or maroon hue. Need more? Pop over here

04 Covered Leg

This one is fairly simple: if it's not a floor-length maxi or full-length bottoms, add a pair of tights or leggings. I know this might seem a little broad, but the style we're going for here is a look that is warm enough for the cold weather while still showing off a silhouette. It means you can repurpose your hue-appropriate floral sundresses by pairing them with some tights and layering with a jacket. We need to stay warm, but we don't have to wear bulky styles to do it. Tights and leggings accentuate a gorgeous leg silhouette while still providing some temp-appropriate coverage.

STYLIST TIP: Let those legs out in the warmest way possible. Tights are a great way to pursue this trend. Opt for black or colored styles that are less translucent than classic and less relevant pantyhose (remember those?). Don't be afraid to layer dresses and skirts over leggings. My favorite pairs are here and here. Not only are they warm, they look like leather but absolutely aren't, and they're perfectly slimming.

05 The Soft Hobo

Think slouchy, effortless, un-structured. The most straightforward option is a hobo bag. Otherwise, choose a look that feels structureless but remains elegant. A bell or gypsy sleeved top or a fitted top layered with a light and flowy choice like a kimono or peplum jacket.

STYLIST TIP: Slouchy & un-structured doesn't mean untailored. Pick a look that hugs you in the right places but lets loose afterward for a truly effortless look. Think boho, but mix in classic elements for a stylish balance.

Ok, let's get to the runway looks...

Yeah, I know what you're here for. (P.S. Hover over any look + click the "+" icon to shop it)

Winter Metallics

So this one didn't make the top 5, but if you ask me it's number 6. Metallics aren't just for tinsel. Silver and gold trends this fall vary from the main element of a floral pattern (see here and here), a subtle metallic accent (like this or this), or a full-blown "you know what it is" (see here and here).

I love this look on the model because the metallic vest adds interest to an otherwise fairly basic look. A base of black and white between the bottoms, booties, a turtleneck and slouchy beanie, but the metallic brings it to life in a cool-wintery way.

You're apt to see me rocking a style with full-blown foil-wrapped glory, but if that's not your jam there are plenty of options to adopt this trend in a more realistic way. Choose a plaid with a stripe of metallic, a pair of tights that boast just a hint of sparkle, or a shiny metallic clutch.

Fierce Floral

Floral doesn't always have to be light and flirty, especially when it comes to fall / winter style. A bronzy base let's you know that this isn't your well-known springy variety.

How to wear it? Pick a floral that has some depth and dimension or incorporates some of the bolder fall shades. Not only that, seek out larger flowers that don't feel as subtle and elegant. We're talking the sort of verdant prints you might find on your grandmother's couch. Less blossomy, more concentrated.

Floor Length Plaid

Plaid is a print that works for anything and everything. A floor length maxi is no exception, but is also a more original way to rock the print. Accenting a black and white classic with standard fall colors like maroon, orange, or navy is the perfect way to dress up this time-honored pattern in a simple way.

The safe option is to stick with a plaid flannel and some denim, but that's no fun. It's one of those prints you don't have to be scared to put all over.

Leather Lust

We already covered the basics above. If you scrolled past that part here's the scoop. Everyone can to it, the trick is in the mix and match. Layer over a light dress or some blush hues for a relaxed look. You don't have to stay classic and stick with black or brown. If it scares you, go blush or nude with the leather itself (see what I mean here).

All Black Monochro- oh...there's a pop of red.

See what I mean, you don't have to wear all red to rock the red trend. Just a pop here and there. Earrings, a handbag, bright lipstick, or a scarf is the literal cherry on top to an all black fall look. Pops of red are almost never a bad idea, but they look especially great with black & white mixed patterns like plaid or polka dots, and navy or blush pieces.

Patches & Pins are in

Otherwise regular blazers and jean jackets are making a statement this season with added patches & pin embellishments. This trend comes in multiples: you'll see 5-10 pins and patches present to complete the piece, not just one. The trick to styling this trend is finding a piece that has enough added embellishments to showcase the style, but not so many that it feels busy and overboard. Stick to pieces where the patches have a solid theme or color scheme so the look feels cohesive and pulled together.

Dresses over Jeans

This is one of those trends that makes it's way back into style every few years. This trend is fun to wear and also practical since you can use existing pieces in your closet to style them all new. Layer a sun dress over a pair of raw hem jeans and throw on a leather jacket or chunky cardigan and you've got a fall look that still feels fresh and flirty. Or go more wintery with a sheer long sleeve black dress and your favorite pair of jeans. This look is best paired with some block heel booties or heels and a pair of jeans that are skinny or straight legged to keep the silhouette sleek.

A little about the Show

We definitely have my sweet friend Yuliya to thank for the invite to this event since it was hosted in her gorgeous apartment building, Steele Creek. We sipped wine, snacked on macaroons, and ooh-ed and aah-ed at all the amazing looks Neiman Marcus put together. If there was any blogger consensus on the fall must have's we were all definitely obsessed with the velvet trend and couldn't get enough of this coat.

Shout out to my girls C.J (@everydaychiffon), Vanessa (@vanessalandlt), Hanna (@littleleebook), and Yuliya (@dresslikeme) for making this night an absolute blast.

Hello Weekend // Alterre Shoes

OH HELLO WEEKEND!

Sometimes you get one of those crazy weeks where everything seems to be moving super fast and it seems like you don't have time to get anything done. That's been my past week, raise your little emoji hand if you feel me. Needless to say, I'm pretty pumped for this weekend.

One thing I've found through all the busyness is that I still need to make time for self-care and putting myself together in the mornings, even if it's just 5 minutes. On days I skip the 5-minute skincare and makeup routine or run errands all day in sweatpants, I always feel even more disheveled and disorganized than when I take a second to get ready before diving into my jam-packed day.

A peak into my week + My Haute Society

I know many of you will DM me to ask why my week was busy and offer encouragement, and seriously you guys are the best! I have to believe I have the most supportive following & readers in the world. But because I know you'll ask, here's a little peak into why I had a crazy week.

My blogger bestie C.J. and I are launching a new influencer community called My Haute Society and we hosted our very first event together this past Tuesday at Wish Boutique in Denver. The even was seriously a blast, we had a great time hanging out with some amazing Denver fashion & lifestyle bloggers and it really got us pumped up for the community we're working to build. (If you want a peak into the event, you can check out this post.) I can't say how happy I am to be partnering with C.J. to make this idea a reality. She is full of great ideas, keeps my nerdy side in check, and I seriously don't think I could have picked a better person to do this with.

In addition to our events, we're also working on our website and the membership component of the community that will include ecourses, guides, community forums, blogger groups and more. It's been a blast, but there is just so much to do before we officially open membership. (P.S. If you want to get on the list to find out as soon as membership opens, just pop over HERE. The first 50 people get free-for-life membership so it's totally worth it!)

Tips for a Casual Chic Look

Through leading a busy girlboss lifestyle, I've learned some tricks to building a casual look that is simple but still looks polished. My best tip for a easy but chic look is to just add pearls. You can dress up a simple tee and shorts or accent a more structured outfit in just this one step. It's not just pearls, any time you add a couple accessories to a look it's going to help your outfit feel more polished and put together, but there is just something classic about pearls that makes it seem like you put in just a little more effort than you actually did. #BusyGoals.

My next tip is to skip the patterns and try colorblocking, which used to be about pairing colors which are opposites on the color wheel togeher but is now more about mixing solid and saturated hues to create one sharp and polished look. If you're not a patterns person, this is totally the  way for you to rock color. If you want to get even more simple that colorblocking, adding a strong pop of color to your look is an easy way to create an outfit that is crazy simple but still has some personality. This fits into a busy schedule because you don't have to worry about matching patterns.

My last tip is to add a little bit of a heel. We're not talking stilettos here, a busy girl doesn't have time to run around in those. A block or mule heel is just enough to add a finishing touch to the look and keep it feeling a little more chic but without the inconvenience of a pen-thin heel.

Alterre Shoes

So I talked about these interchangeable shoes back in this NYFW Street Style post, but I got quite a few questions about them so I think it's time we dive deeper. The shoes are made by Alterre, which is one of my favorite shoe brands started by two amazing girlbosses who are on a mission to empower women through fashion. Seriously, each look is named after women they admire.

"Our shoes are inspired by strong women and the many roles they lead" - Harmony Pilobello & Shilpa Lyengar, Alterre Founders

They have essentially 3 lifts or base shoes that you can swap the straps on to create a whole new style without needing a whole new shoe. There is a sandal lift, a mule lift (the one I'm wearing) and a platform lift. The specific look  I've got on is the Blush Carnaval Mule lift with mismatched straps: the yellow is the "Marilyn" style in Sunshine and the white strap is the "Bianca" style in Cream. I love that you can pack lighter and bring fewer pairs of shoes without having to give up having the perfect style to go with your outfit.

About the look

So first, this sweater because it's super fun. I got this back in May from a GAP outlet and it was the last one left. I can't find it anywhere to link to, but I did find a sort of similar "Hello" version here. If you need a little more of a statement sweater, here's one with a huge sunshine that would go well with some olive green pants. I paired my navy sweater with my favorite ever hot pink pants from Old Navy. I'm a huge fan of navy and hot pink together, especially in a colorblocking look, since I think they balance each other out really well and create an outfit that looks polished but is still fun.

I'm wearing the interchangeable shoes from Alterre that I linked above, plus a matching pearl necklace and earrings from Kate Spade. I'm not sure they carry these in stores anymore, but if you find them somewhere like Nordstrom Rack be sure to let me know! What I love about this pearl necklace is that it has a little gold bow in it (like this one) instead of just a solid string of pearls. The earrings also have matching bows at the top.

As always, You can shop this whole look via the VENNDY widget below.

What are your favorite casual chic looks? Excited to try these interchangeable shoes?

TAORAY WANG // SS18

Fashion Week

Fashion week is truly an amazing concept. We come together twice a year to share new ideas about style, set new trends, and simply ooh and ahh over new collections from both seasoned and up-and-coming designers.

It's a jam-packed week where almost each show seems more and more impressive than the one before it. Every once in a while, you experience a collection that truly leaves you in awe. Collections like these not only have gorgeous designs or polished looks, but they leave you with a deeper sense of inspiration. You don't just want to add the runway pieces to your wardrobe, you want to emulate the aesthetic and make it a part of your own personal style.  This season, Taoray Wang's collection did just that.

The Inspiration

Two Baroque musicians, Purcell and Handel, were the source of inspiration for Taoray Wang's 2018 Spring Summer collection. When their masterpieces were performed at the Shanghai Symphony Hall, it brought to mind the poise & elegant style of the era from King William III to George II and awakened scenes of palaces and opera houses filled with well-dressed and sophisticated attendees.

With this performance as the basis of her inspiration, this season's collection continued some of the artistic themes throughout Wang Tao's work, including merging classic and modern elements as well as creating balance and union between eastern and western influences. For this collection, she combined modern eastern elements inspired by the Shanghai Camerata performance with classic western elements the baroque performance recalled.

The Collection

The collection is characterized by modern lines and a sleek tailored look, but one that feels elegant and not overly geometric. Some of the straightforward interpretations of the Baroque era include ruffles and a reinterpretation of the ruff as a waistband.

In addition to black and white, mauve and light blue linens are prominently featured in the collection and allude to the popular textile hues of the era. Lace accents add a sophisticated feel and contrasts well with some of the clean and simple silhouettes. Leg slit skirts were also a theme throughout the collection, as well as draped tops combined with fitted bottoms.

 Personal Style Takeaways

This collection was immensely influential for my personal style. I loved the balance between sleek and feminine. I'm inspired to style more looks that feature the highly tailored look on bottom with a loose and flowy top.

I also really love all the monochromatic statement tops. It was a good reminder that a statement piece doesn't always mean a bright color or eye-catching pattern. A stylish statement piece can be achieved through the a twist on a classic cut or silhouette.

Fall Street Style // Velvet + Floral Duster

- Fashion, NYFW

Forget everything you know about fall style...ok well maybe not everything, but at least a few things when it comes to colors and prints. It's time to go easy on those browns, navys, and maroons and grab some blush-colored pieces to mix into your fall wardrobe. Light pink isn't just for spring - in fact, it's one of the top picks in the fall color palette

Blush is the perfect compliment to most all of the classic fall colors, and gives you a more subtle option if you don't feel your best in the traditional deep fall hues or brighter tones like reds and oranges.

The Velvet Trend

This trend was a top pick last season, and it's making a full return for a second round as one of  the top looks for fall 2017. We shouldn't be surprised, velvet had it's start as early as the 1600's and has been waxing and waning in and out of the style spotlight ever since.

Don't be fooled though, every time velvet comes strutting back on to runways and then stores it reinvents itself with a modern take. This season, we're lo0king for more chic velvet pieces like dresses, ruffled skirts, and mixed material tops. Not only that, set your eyes on bold and fun colors like blues, yellows, and, of course, blush pink.

Floral Duster

This is the year not to fear fall floral.  Floral prints are a breath of warm, summery air for fall and winter wardrobes.

The trick to fall florals is finding one with deeper undertones like navy or maroon. Pops of orange and deep red in addition to more pastel colors like light pink help give the print balance and creates a seamless fit into winter wardrobes.

If you check out the abstract floral pattern on this duster, you'll notice it checks all of these boxes. It still has the light and fun vibe of floral but with pops of oranges and navy undertones, it could blend in perfectly if worn over a classic maroon turtleneck or army green chunky knit sweater.

Street Style

The main thing about street style in NYC during fashion week is that it's everywhere. Walking around outside before and after the shows was highly inspirational for my wardrobe and I found my adventurous side running wild with new ideas about how to style the many existing pieces in my closet. Fashion is a sort of creative expression that can't be matched. Its with us in daily life, needs no words to convey a feeling and vibe. When I captioned a photo of this outfit for Instagram I said,

"Fashion is most often found strutting down a runway, but style finds you on the street.

Fashion is the art of designing the clothes, but style is the art of living in them. I was immensely impressed with the designs on the runway, which I expected I would be. What I didn't expect was how in awe I would be of all the creativity around me through the pieces people chose to put together and the ways in which they styled them.

About the look

This velvet wrap top is made of beautifully crushed blush velvet and has a peak-through chiffon layer which adds dimension and personality. The back has a tie right below the neckline. It's fairly fitted with a perfect v-neck. The soft velvety texture is a perfect contrast for the sleek and silky look of the duster. Lined with a drawstring waist, this duster jacket has a perfect fit that hits right below the knee. Some of my other favorite features, besides the amazing pattern, are the pockets and side slits.

Since the velvet and duster combo is the main focus of this outfit, I paired it with some light shredded boyfriend denim for a balanced feel and casual look. I had to cuff it to show off these shoes a little more. They're interchangeable: letting you swap out the straps to dress them up or down. I finished off the look with some thin hoop earrings with a pearl accent.

Sweet Home Colorado // 20+ Must Visit Denver Spots

Life in the Mile High

There's so much I didn't know about Denver before calling it home. If you're transplant (like me) or just passing through, you might be still discovering some of Denver's hidden gems. If you've never been to the Mile High, but have always wondered what it's like to live here, stay tuned. I'm dishing on my favorite Denver spots. Some I've discovered by chance, some I've finally got around to visiting after multiple recommendations and they've quickly become favorites.

Before we dive into the specifics, let's chat about some general things to know about Denver. First, it's super creatively inspired. From the street art and uniquely remodeled industrial buildings, to activities like fairs and festivals, Denver's got its own special creative flair. Yes, the weather is as amazing (and also unpredictable) as you've probably heard. Most restaurants & bars have a patio, usually complete with garage-door windows that slide up to make the whole space open to the outside.

Bikes and puppies are pretty popular. With the weather so nice, many people don't mind biking their commute. And we definitely love our dogs. It's not uncommon to see a pooch walking around grocery shopping with it's human. Ok I could seriously go on forever about all the general little things I love about Denver, but let's get to some specifics.

Denver Eats

BREAKFAST + BRUNCH

OLIVE & FINCH - I love brunch (ha, could you tell?), but it doesn't always have to be a planned outing. Olive & Finch offers a casual, order & seat yourself setting with from-scratch and ready-to-order dishes. A super casual brunch should still be delicious, and O&F has nailed the balance. My absolute favorite is the Milano which comes piping hot in a skillet with a side of fruit and toast. I also like to grab a rejuvenate juice, and a piece of gluten-free chocolate chip banana bread to take to-go.

SNOOZE - A breakfast spot with a truly authentic Denver vibe, Snooze boasts an eclectic & fun atmosphere and a menu that's full of breakfast classics with a creative twist. My most-loved dish has to be the Bella! Bella! Benny. There's a reason this spot usually has a wait that's at least 30 minutes long (but is commonly known to be up to 2 hours during prime brunch time). Its good...like really good. Luckily they offer free coffee in cute orange cups while you wait, along with patio games like cornhole or giant jenga.

CONCOURSE - This spot is fairly new to the Denver brunch scene and happens to be in my immediate neighborhood. Stapleton used to be the primary airport serving Denver, but when it was relocated further east, this meant there were acres of land just northeast of downtown waiting to be developed. New homes, shops & restaurants have filed the space with more to come. Concourse pays homage to it's location, both literally with the name and through the Colorado inspired dishes. My go-to is the Denver omlet with rosemary ham, cheddar & piquillo peppers. The fried chicken + cornmeal waffles are also a fan favorite.

fall style | fall outfit | dress up a tshirt | denver colorado travel | felt hat | olive green denim | raw kritix tees | denver fashion blogger | never skip brunch | cara newhart | local denver brand

LUNCH + HAPPY HOUR

MACHETE - I could eat tacos & drink margs daily (who's with me?). Their menu is inspired by the heart of Mexico City, and their margaritas don't mess around - they're stout and delicious. My preferred Machete tacos include the Arrachera and the Al Pastor. Marg-wise, my go-to is the skinny margarita, but I'm also in love with the raspberry marg since it's fruity but means business - with house-infused tequila and muddled fresh raspberries.

AVANTI FOOD & BEVERAGE - The best way to explain Avanti is seven different food trucks built into a two story bar, with a sweet rooftop view of downtown Denver. It's a modern day food hall with all open-seating where everyone can gather for happy hour or a casual lunch and eat whatever genre of food they're feeling at the moment. It's tough to pick a favorite, but the spot I eat at the most often is the Quiero Arepas restaurant.

ANTHONY'S - Let's be real, I order this pizza for a late-night or drunk snack more often than I actually go in and eat it for lunch. It's absolutely delicious either way. Anthony's is true New York style, but with a Colorado touch. Thin and fresh, plus they have amazing ranch. I'm not a pizza snob and I'm usually happy with any, but this pie stands out above most any other crafted in Denver. They have multiple locations, but we lived outside their delivery radius for a year and it was a struggle. Happy to be back in range of an old favorite. (oh P.S. Yes, they do have gluten free and you don't even miss it)

DINNER

PIATTI - Serving up classically delicious Italian in the heart of Cherry Creek. Piatti always has amazing specials and a great wine list, but my single favorite dish has to be their saffron pappardelle. If you're more of a classic spaghetti & bolognese person, I also highly recommend that dish - but be sure to add a meatball because they're super delicious. I love this spot for the classic vibe, plus the valet plays a pretty impressive game of tetris in the front lot since spots are limited, but valet is free (essential in Cherry Creek North).

OCEAN PRIME - This is the perfect date night spot, since I love seafood but my husband would rather stick to a delicious steak. The menu is absolutely fantastic, the setting is gorgeous, and the location is perfect - it's right in the heart of Larimer Square, which is Denver's most historic block. I have so many favorite dishes I won't bore you with the list, but get yourself a creme brulee for dessert - its worth it.

CHOLON - I went to Cholon for the first time for dinner with a couple friends from out of town. I had been for lunch before, and while it was good I wasn't exactly blown away. Dinner was another story altogether. From soup dumplings that pop in your mouth to pork belly served on a bun that was actually more along the lines of a cloud bread, our series of asian-inspired shared & small plates surprised and delighted with each round.

Shopping

If you're just looking for a great mall with some go-to stores plus a few high end options, my go-to is the Cherry Creek Shopping Center. I almost always valet - since the garage is paid parking, the few extra dollars for front door service is totally worth it. They also have fun events every once in a while, so be sure to check their website before you pop by.

If you're in search of shopping with a more Denver-only vibe, all you have to do is walk across 1st ave and you've got blocks and blocks of local shopping. We're talking boutiques, galleries, furniture stores, handmade finds, plus a few great restaurants (including Piatti, Machete, and Olive & Finch that I talked about above).

I have so so many favorite boutiques in Denver, but my three favorites in this shopping area would have to be A Line boutique, Stitch Boutique, and Inspyre Boutique. I also really love the Artisan Center for gifts & knick knacks.

Places + Activities

RINO - Denver's arts district, RiNo is home to much of the street art I talked about before, plus a slough of creative businesses - from craftsman & artists to retail shops & unique spots to grab a drink. My favorites for the latter are the Infinite Monkey Theorem and the newly-opened Blue Moon Brewery.

UNION STATION - For many locals this is just a spot to grab a drink from the Terminal Bar before commuting home, but if it's your first time in Denver Union Station & the surrounding area are a must-see. There are multiple restaurants + retail venues in Union Station...even a Snooze location (see above). It's the perfect spot for a photo-op since it's lit up seasonally on the outside (purple for rockies, red + green for the holidays, etc). Plus, the surrounding blocks are also a great place to explore and you're just a few blocks from Lodo (lower downtown, aka the young + hip bar scene)

PARKS - Denver has almost 200 parks, but the top two must-visits are Washington Park (aka "Wash Park) and City Park.

THE BEER - I'm no longer a beer girl myself since developing a gluten allergy (the worst!), but if you're a fan, Denver is definitely the place to find your new favorite brew. Micro breweries are everywhere and they're a super affordable way to have a night of drinks with friends. My (pre-allergy) favorites are the Breckenridge Brewery & Pub, the Denver Beer Company (I recommend the graham cracker stout) and Bull & Bush Pub & Brewery (I'm a little partial to this one because I used to live right next door and the food is delicious). Here's a full list, but if you can't hit them all I recommend Tap 14.

MISC FAVORITES - A few more of my absolute favorite spots would be Punch Bowl Social, Voodoo Doughnut, and Stanley Marketplace, which is a group of 50+ shops, restaurants & businesses built in an old hanger from the Stapleton Airport.

What I'm Wearing

I know, this tee is awesome. It's a design from Raw Krityx and a perfect way to tout the Colorado lifestyle.

Graphic tees have to be the OG fall transition piece.

So easy to layer, you can dress them up or down, and they work as your own personal billboard / conversation starter. If you're sold, you can get this exact one here (it also comes in white). Speaking of layering, a lace cardigan is a relatively unique and feminine way to achieve a warmer look - just in case you needed an idea for a sweater that's not totally a sweater.

If you watch my insta story, you've probably seen these earrings a few times. Not only that, you know I also got them in Hawaii and sadly can't find them anywhere on the mainland US. If you want a similar look you can check out these or these.

These raw hem, olive green jeans were a quick-pinch snag from Target, but they're already shaping up to be a fall staple. The perfect color, on-trend with the raw hem, and they've got a fun white paint splat. The price tag (just under $30) has got me wishing I could grab them in every color.

Everyone needs a good felt hat. This grey felight fedora was another quick snag, but from last season. It's back in stock and a great way to try out the trend before you invest in a more pricey version.

An Ode to Inspiration // Inspire to Give Collection

- Fashion, Lifestyle

A little note on Inspiration

Inspiration is a funny thing. It often hits us when we least expect it, and when we try to go searching for it we frequently seem to come up dry.

Taking some time to reflect on all the people who have inspired us through our lifetime can be a pretty incredible experience. Not only are we reminded of just how many people surrounded us and guided us in all the different choices we've made, we also start to see a little clearer picture of just how different our life might have been without them.

"If it's the culmination of our choices that brought us to where we are today, then it is the people who influenced and shaped those choices that we have to thank for becoming who we are now."

Today's post is dedicated to all those who have inspired me, but especially those who have pushed me to pursue my creative passions.

Finding Inspiration

I think we're in a really unique position to have so much inspiration at our fingertips. Whether we're just generally browsing the web, or searching specific hashtags, there is beautiful content to inspire almost every niche and interest - seemingly to no end.

One of my main personal struggles with inspiration is attaining a balance between allowing inspiration to give rise to motivation to create or do something great and getting sucked into a riptide where it feels like everyone's creative work is so much better than mine. I think it's easy to scroll through a feed of beautiful photos and amazing content and instead of feeling deeply motivated to add to the stream, feeling immensely disappointed because you believe your addition wouldn't be good enough.

For some it might be a makeup tutorial or a fitness video that they let shoot them down like this, thinking they can never be enough. For me, it's creating content as an influencer.

What I've learned, is that for inspiration to be truly effective, you have to have a  'why.' Your why is your reason for doing what you're doing in the first place. If it's fitness, it might be that you want to work out to be stronger, healthier, and happier. If it's fashion, your 'why' in rebuilding your wardrobe maybe that you want to learn to love your body for the way it is, and dressing it more strategically will help you see yourself in a better light.

Whatever your 'why,' you have a clear direction for the goals you're creating because you have a guiding purpose. Inspiration then works in tandem with your why, motivating you and encouraging you in what you're doing as well as giving you ideas about how to be better in setting and reaching your goals.

When you stay true to your 'why,' you will be more resilient when it comes to the comparison game. It won't be as easy for you to get down on yourself when you look at what everyone else is doing, because you have a clear vision and reason for doing exactly what you're doing.

(P.S. if you're a blogger, I wrote a whole post for Style Collective all about finding your why and sticking to it, you can give it a read HERE)

My Inspiration

One of the people who has inspired me most in my creative work has been my cousin, Megan Mueller. She's a incredible photographer for bloggers & entrepreneurs based in Dallas and I'm constantly drawing inspiration from her shoots to influence my work and make it better.

I think it's a really special thing when you can be inspired by family. You will likely never meet your favorite celebrity or the stranger from that #outfitinspo post on instagram, but when you have the opportunity to draw inspiration from family members, especially ones you have grown up around, its a pretty amazing thing.

Megan is 4 years older than me, so I've been looking up to her my whole life. From modeling my Barbie dreamhouse goals after her set-up to dreaming of finally getting a speaking part in a play like she had, there's always been something about her creative ambitions that I admired and wanted to emulate.

It wouldn't be right if I didn't give her a little shout out for inspiring me to get to where I am today. If you want to catch some of the inspo, go pop by her IG here @meganmweaver

A little about the look

You might have noticed that my tee matches the topic of this post perfectly, and here's why: It's from Lucy's Inspired, which is a jewelry brand inspired by things like vintage chandeliers, architectural salvage, and found keys. Part of Lucy's line includes her Inspire to Give collection, which are pieces that come in twos.n One is to keep and one to give away - maybe it's to someone who has inspired you or maybe its for someone you'd like to inspire.

For this look, I'm wearing both the inspire to give bracelets and a lariat from the Clara Collection. I dressed up this tee with some serious pops of color. These bright yellow pants are from Old Navy and they're the perfect casual compliment to a comfy tee. I snagged this neck scarf from Target because I couldn't avoid the bright pink and purple. I finished off the look with some pink crisscross slides which add another pop of color.

You can shop this whole look via the VENNDY widget below.

Meet me in Vegas // Kendra Scott Color Bar

- Fashion
header

Vegas is the land of shopportinity. If that's an unfamiliar term for you, it means the shopping is ah-mazing. I don't have to go very far to find some of my favorite brands, many of which have multiple stores on the strip for even more convenience.

I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't make a visit to the iconic Fashion Show Mall. If you haven't been, the mall hosts weekend fashion shows, which is where the name comes from. While my trip was too packed to catch a show I did purchase a new handbag and was invited to Kendra Scott to experience the Color Bar.

Kendra Scott Color Bar

The Color Bar lets you design your own pieces. You choose your setting, stone, and metal. The combinations are truly endless, and for a color-lover like me it's an accessory paradise.

I love that I got to play around with different combinations of my favorite styles, favorite colors, and even I'm not usually drawn to. The whole process definitely helped me create a [long] wish list for KS pieces that I can't wait to create.

I tried all kinds of combinations, but fell in love with the rose gold settings. I usually can't avoid pops of color - for me to buy something neutral, especially when it comes to jewelry, is a rarity.

Ironically, the color bar is where I fell in love with multiple neutral pieces and actually took home an iridescent drusy & rose gold combo in multiple styles. They have a simple elegant look that still makes a statement, and they go with absolutely everything - from a range of colors to day and night looks.

My Picks

First up is the Teo Pendant. It has a thicker chain than the classic Elisa Necklace and is adjustable from a choker all the way to a pendant, so it's perfect for layering. I also fell in love with the Elyse Ring and pair of Tessa Stone Earrings. I just love how the Tessa studs look with the Teo Pendant. I already have a pair of Ellie Stud Earrings, which round out my collection and have the same classic style as the ring.

Once I finalized my picks, the KS girls set the stones and wrapped the pieces up in some beautiful gift boxes. If you're not close to a KS Store, you can also try out the color bar online HERE.

Scallop Dress + this look

I picked this scalloped shift dress I'm wearing from TOBI as part of a collaboration and it's been my absolute favorite dress recently! The soft scalloped edges are simply gorgeous and the fit is just perfect.

The quarter sleeves make this dress an ideal transition piece for fall. It comes in 7 colors, but I'm especially loving the black and navy for the fall season. Oh also, it's just $26 (originally $52), so go snag you a couple.

I belted the dress with a blush bow belt to complete the silhouette and add a cute feminine touch. My favorite floral block heels finish off the look and coordinate with the blush belt.

5 tips for your first time in Vegas // Meghna Jewels

- Fashion, Travel

Before this last weekend, I was a Vegas virgin, mostly because I just never had a reason to go visit. This news was crazy to my husband, who grew up going pretty often since he lived only a few hours away. We spontaneously booked this trip after a few glasses of wine and I wasn't too sure what I was in store for.

All I had heard about time spent in Vegas was stories of craziness and shenanigans, which often included drinking too much or loosing stuff. I geared up for a wild ride, just in case. Turns out, Vegas is one of my hands down new favorite places to visit and with the flight from Denver under 2 hours, I see us going at least once every year.

I'm sharing my best tips for your first time in Vegas plus some details about this outfit.

Tips for your first time in Vegas

TIP 01: Take a cab if you're walking more than two buildings away.

In Vegas, things are [a lot] further away than they look. When you're looking out the window of the 31st floor of the Bellagio, things don't look very far away because you're so high up. The strip is 4 miles long, but because the buildings are close together, everything looks a lot closer than it is. Our rule of thumb is to cab if were we're going is over two buildings away, especially if it's hot.

TIP 02: Know how the casino drinks work, plan accordingly.

If you're in the casino, there is usually a cocktail waitress offering free drinks in an effort to keep you in your seat and spending money. This is the best way to drink if you're on a budget (don't forget to tip). If you're looking for more complicated drinks like martinis, those will be free on the cocktail waitress but they are usually a lot better (and stronger) from the casino bar.

Rich and I couldn't help ourselves going back to the casino bar again and again to get our drinks of choice: a lemon drop martini for me and a french martini for him. They were just SOO much better. Oh PS, its legal to have open containers on the strip so don't forget to take a drink to-go when you're out walking around.

TIP 03: Don't eat bad food

Vegas has no shortage of delicious and highly-rated restaurants at a range of price points. There is no excuse for a low-quality meal. Whether it's a fancy dinner or a quick lunch, you're surrounded by amazing restaraunts. All it takes is a little research and checking ratings before booking. Also, peak dinner time in Vegas is from 6-8pm. If you don't have a res and don't want to wait, be flexible and eat a little earlier (5pm) or later (9pm)

TIP 04: Know how the costume characters work

The Strip has someone dressed up as every character you can imagine. From showgirls to Minnie Mouse, you can find just about anyone. Just remember this is not Disneyland, so if you take a photo with one of them they expect you to pay for it - usually about $20. If that's not worth it to you, pass to avoid an awkward situation or negotiate your price up front.

TIP 05: Don't book the cheapest hotel

I know this is tempting, because how much will you be in your room anyway? But booking the cheapest spot on the strip or staying off the strip is a rookie mistake and you may be disappointed. Vegas hotels are unlike your usual destination hotel. They're huge, beautiful, and packed with loads of amenities like amazing restaurants, gorgeous pools, and attached malls. Pick a hotel towards the center of the strip so it's easier to get around and choose your hotel based on the amenities that really matter to you.

If you're on a budget, don't go on peak nights. Saturday nights can run you as high as $500 a night, but booking on a sunday night or mid-week could be as low as $150. This is a pretty good resource for travel deals + hotels.

Meghna Jewels

When Meghna first reached out about her jewelry designs, I fell in love instantly with her line. It shouldn't have been a surprise, her pieces were featured in "Gossip Girl," worn by Serena (ahem..I mean Blake Lively) which is one of my all-time favorite shows. Each piece she designs is inspired by her Indian heritage, and she likes to describe them as "fiercely gorgeous" which I think is absolutely spot on.

For me, her pieces are the perfect blend of statement and wearable. The colorfulness and boldness of her line stands out prominently, and as a color lover I can see myself adding quite a few of her pieces to my wardrobe.

The signature pave arches signifies fierceness and letting going of fear, taking a step forward in what you believe in and pursuing your passion. Follow your own individual style, follow your dreams and follow what you believe in." - Meghna

She sent me the textured druzy necklace and ring, which had a beautiful muted gold base and soft blue stone while the size and texture made a bold statement. Both pieces have a beautiful vintage feel to them. My favorite design elements have to be the halo of sparkly CZ stones and the beautiful texture of the druzy stone. It's natural roughness adds interest and dimension, which make it the perfect statement piece.

Her two signature collections are the Bora Bora collection, which has a natural and earthy feel with leaf shapes but boasts brightly colored stones and an exotic feel. Her other collection is the Claw collection which features sharp paved arches and edgy designs.

What I Wore

The first think you might be thinking, is why am I in long sleeves in Vegas in the middle of August. Well, here's another pro-tip: it might be blazing outside but the hotels & casinos overcompensate by blasting the AC. This particular day was relatively cool for summer (like 87 vs 106 degrees out) and we did this shoot while walking on the breezeway from the Bellagio to the Cosmopolitan. I found myself in long sleeves or bringing along a light jacket for most of the trip so I wasn't freezing when inside.

This top is actually a choker bodysuit and it is amazingly comfortable (Arlet Wine Bodysuit - TOBI). The fabric is soft and has great stretch, plus wine is definitely shaping up to be one of my favorite colors for this fall. I'm also a huge fan of the back. The choker neckline is achieved by a vertical bar back, which is just gorgeous. My pants are actually the faux leather leggings from Spanx.

If you've been around this blog for a little bit you've heard me rave about these before and for all you newbies I'm going to do it again. They're fabric...not plastic like most leather ones and coated in a shiny layer that just makes them look like leather. Haute not hot, spanx so they hold everthing in, and so comfortable.

These velvet floral booties were another snag from the Nordies sale. Bad news, the price has gone back up but the good news is they're still in stock. I'm obsessed with the wine-colored floral print and the hints of navy. I'm thinking these will be a wardrobe staple for a couple seasons.

A little about VENNDY

What is venndy? Started by a group of female entrepreneurs, VENNDY is a platform designed to help you curate your favorite products and services into stories, while discovering new ones from your friends or favorite bloggers.

VENNDY is a user-generated content platform focusing on contextual connectivity."

VENNDY allows you to save products and services into 8 different categories: fashion, living, and beauty just to name a few. You can then curate these saved "VENNS" into stories, whether its a closed outfit story that only you can add products to or a shared "Office Inspo" story that friends can add their favorite finds to as well. VENNDY comes with a chrome extension that lets you save and curate products as you're shopping online.

VENNDY is a little similar to Pinterest, but with a few key improvements. First, your VENNs (or saved products) have space for a lot more information. You can rate products & services, select the product description to be saved with your VENN, and add some personal notes. The categories are similar to boards, but things are much easier to find because of the ability to add subcategories, like 'shoes' or 'tops' for fashion.

I tend to use pinterest to hoard every and any idea, where my VENNDY is a more curated list of my actual favorite things. The two aren't mutually exclusive though - you can also pin your VENNS and Stories right to Pinterest from your VENNDY Dashboard.

You can learn all you need to know about VENNDY HERE

VENNDY PERKS for Bloggers

I use VENNDY to create shoppable stories for each of my blog posts. This gives my followers a place to shop all of my favorite products in one place.

VENNDY has a unique proposition in that it can be a place where I can curate all my affiliate content in a way that is more shopping-focused than a blog post"

VENNDY is also an amazing way to monetize my blog. When I save a product, there is a spot to add an affiliate link. The real perk to VENNDY is that it helps you to monetize your blog  from day one by using affiliate marketing. While it might take months or even a year for your blog itself to gain traction, VENNDY is a shared platform - which means readers might initially come to the platform because of another blogger, but they'll see your content and discover you.

but first brunch shirt giveaway | monetize your blog with affiliate links | Cute Crop Top | venndy platform for bloggers | never skip brunch apparel line | Cara Newhart - Denver Style Blogger

VENNDY lets you put reviews and blog posts into a marketplace of reviews, which helps readers easily find what they are looking for and shop it.

The biggest advantage is being able to combine links from different affiliate programs (and even non-affiliate links) into one carousel for a post."

You can easily create a product carousel (like the one at the end of this post) and link products or services from anywhere - from your favorite sites or affiliate links. This also means you don't have to stick to just one affiliate program. You can use links from places like ShopStyleCollective, Amazon, & RewardStyle all in one shoppable carousel.

Ready to give VENNDY a try? The good news is entering the giveaway (below) will help you signup and start using the platform, plus you can win some prizes while doing it!
