It's almost Valentines Day! Of course its my favorite, there is chocolate and flowers and sappiness. I'm finally looking for gifts for my guy a little early this year, so I'm not cutting it close like usual. So today, in the spirit of sappiness, I'm sharing the story of how I met my man + a mini gift guide that includes my favorite picks for gifts to give your guy for Valentine's Day.

How I met my "Human"

Stage 1: Rich Meets Me.
Rich met me when I was a freshman in this section of the College of Business where everyone from our major hung out (aka the "EMSA Office1"). There were study Tables, a fully stocked candy jar, free printing...yeah it was a pretty cool place. I however, do not remember this encounter at all.

Stage 2: I meet Rich.
Fast forward to about November of my junior year (his senior year) and we are now bumping into each other in that same office all the time and exchanging sarcastic comments and doing some verbal jousting. I'm sure he told me his name, but I'm terrible at names so I didn't remember. I simply referred to him as "Houston's best friend2

Stage 3: Some Shenanigans.
I will preface these shenanigans by saying that if you didn't know me in college, I was a very serious nerd who was very overly involved in everything. Now, this had gotten a little better by the time I reached Jr Year (and a LOT better by sr year) mostly because I found some really fun friends and could finally buy my own wine.
Ok now fast forward to February that year, and our program takes a trip to Houston to a conference called NAPE: It's is an oil and gas expo, including about 17,000 of your closest friends and no shortage of happy hours that turn into corporate parties that turn into a long night out...and then you wake up early and do it all over again for three days. We as students were there to network, which means you can have a night out but must promptly pull yourself together by 7am to go mix and mingle with industry professionals. It takes endurance.
So night two we are at a corporate party, and I (wine in hand) am doing some networking with a circle of people who have the power to give me a job. Houston's best friend (Rich) strolls up to the group and decides to test my improvisation skills with "Oh, so you've all met my ex-wife Cara!"
The nerd in me clams up all awkwardly, the feistiness plus the wine in me decides to fire back, "Yeah...the divorce has been pretty rough, I mean we haven't even signed the papers yet because we can't decide who gets the dog and I can't find my favorite pen." Everyone is now looking at us like, "Um, why are you two dropping all this on us at this lighthearted networking event?" It was fun, he was funny, not to mention pretty adorable in his suit, and that's when I decided I kinda liked him.

Stage 4: FBO + Becoming Humans.
Fast forward to March, and mission figure-out-Houston's-best-friend's-real-name was a success. After a couple months of more bump-in's in the EMSA office, margaritas after class, and a few nights out, we were staying for a two-week summer intersession class4 and finally decided to date. We did the whole long distance thing for a year, I graduated and moved to Denver, we got engaged, we had a baby girl, and we are getting married in April! (whew, that escalated quickly)

So, that's how I found my human (yes, he has all these adorable nicknames for me, and all I can muster for him is calling him "human"...like a puppy) and he's just the best.

THE GO TO GIFT:

1. Dark Sandalwood & Smoke Watch, FRANKIE Series - JORD

A watch is really one of the most romantic gifts a girl can give. It's classy, it's with him everyday, and its a cute little reminder that he has your time before anyone else. I love this wood watch from JORD because it's so sleek, and the wood body makes it such an amazing statement piece. Plus, they do custom engraving, which makes giving it to your guy just that much more special.
The other thing I love about JORD is that the watch comes with a super fun wood box that has a magnetic lid (the one in the photo at the very top of this post).

P.S. You can shop all of the JORD men's collection here, but the more fun thing is that JORD is currently giving away a $100 gift card! You can enter here, and the great news is that if you don't win, you will still get a $25 gift card to their site. Whoop whoop! (The contest ends 2/19/2017)

FOR THE ATHLETE...or if your guy loves to work out.

2. The Wood Bottle, Teakwood - SWELL

How cool is this bottle? It looks like it was just whittled out of a tree, but it's actually made of double-walled stainless steel, which means it keeps things cold for 24hrs and hot for 12hrs. Which is no joke, because I take water with me to bed in my marble one, and there is still a ton of ice in it when I wake up. This is the perfect gift for the guy that loves to workout, but it's honestly a great pick for any guy. Especially here in Denver where it takes extra effort to stay hydrated all day.

 FOR THE BARTENDER...or aspiring mixologist.

3. Saddle Leather Cocktail Shaker - POTTERY BARN

This pick is perfect whether your guy is a pro mixologist or just taking up cocktail crafting. I just love how sleek and simple this shaker is, it's for sure a great addition to the bar. The leather is hand-stitched, and you can add a monogram to make the gift even more personal. If you're a DIY-er, this shaker also makes a perfect vase for a mini liquor bouquet.

FOR THE ADVENTURER...or aspiring outdoorsman

4. Outdoor Survival Crate - MAN CRATES

This survival kit arrives sealed in a wood crate and comes with a crowbar to open it. It includes things like a shovel with interchangeable saw, pickaxe, hatchet and hammer heads, a paracord knife, some more paracord, a minimalist cook set, plus of course some beef jerky. This is the perfect starter if your guy is interested in testing out life off the grid, and a great addition to your guy's collection if he already has the outdoorsman thing down.
